Family, food and gifts...and tons of them!
We had a great Christmas. I hope yours was just as good!
I didn't take a lot of pictures but I did add some to my photo album.
Yes, that is a plate Ridley is holding. The plate was put out on christmas eve and Ridley mistook it as a gift from Santa. She figures Santas elves painted it just for her.
I love it when things work out that way.

Happy Birthday Ridley!
Shes 7! Its hard to believe she was ever a 4lb itty bitty.
Her kid only birthday party was yesterday. Did you know it takes only a few minutes for 13 kids to completely demolish a gingerbread house?
The family came over to celebrate her birthday tonight. Lots of fun! She loved all of her gifts but her favourite was the puppy surprise she got from Momma and Poppa. (pictured below) The birthday girl is now completely exhausted and I'm sure will sleep well tonight.

Pandora - The Music Genome Project
Online radio is not something I've ever dabbled in but I like the way this works. It limits the amount of skips per hour but still, for someone like me who frequently asks people "What are you listening to?", this is great!

The Music Genome Project
On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.
Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal hamony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.
Over the past 5 years, we've carefully listened to the songs of over 10,000 different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.
It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy - but now that we've created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe.
We hope you enjoy the journey.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
I don't think anyone would ever classify Ridley as shy. It used to be though that if you asked her to sing or if you commented on the song she was singing, she would clam up. She is 6 now (going on 7) and has decided she loves to sing. We were leaving Walmart after picking up some last minute Hallowe'en stuff and she broke into a song about ghosts and goblins the second we stepped out the door. Did I mention it was loud? She got a lot of smiles that day. I have to admit she stunned me. Shy one day, and singing to the masses at Walmart the next. Go figure!
Her current favourite is this...
Hey, ho, nobody home
Meat nor drink nor money have I none.
Yet will I be merry
She has been singing this all day long..everyday.
Overall though I'm thrilled that shes enjoying singing so much. (cause I'm too shy to sing in front of people)

"Santa has a blog??" or "Its started already???" (take your pick)
Oh yeah. A podcast too!
HoHoHo!
Now that the American Thanksgiving has been over for about 10 minutes or so, here we go again. Seriously. Our first major snowfall was last night/today and Ridley and I got invited to a carolling party. Thats not something I would do on my own, but the child loves to sing so a-singing we will go.
Oh and a-shopping we must go this weekend. Not only is Christmas coming but Ridley's birthday is the week before! I have to get party planning.
Ridley is sick tonight. She has tummy pain so I've got to keep an eye on her for the next few hours. Coffee time. To those fortunate enough to be able to sleep tonight... :p

I added my xbox live gamercard to the sidebar.
I would have picked a different username and avatar though. (Scott signed up while I wasn't looking) I'll change the avatar to a pink haired girl I think. ;)

Project Gotham Racing 3 (yeah, more gaming stuff)
Surprise, our local EB got it today!
The game looks great and plays great!
One major complaint and one minor. First, there is no mini available!! What were they thinking??? (I'll have to rely on Forza for my mini fix)
Minor complaint, you can't blow up things like you can in Need for Speed - Most Wanted.
If you're going to crash in the game, you might as well make it worth it.
Thats it for games until Animal Crossing for Nintendo DS comes out in December. Ridley is getting a pink DS for her birthday or christmas so we'll be able to play together over wifi. We have played a lot of Animal Crossing (Gamecube) together over the past couple of years so this is going to be great fun!
I've been posting a lot of game stuff I know but I am not really a hardcore gamer. Once in awhile something comes along that catches my attention though. :)
(and theres been a lot of cool stuff coming out lately!)

I don't hate my ipod anymore. (more xbox 360)
Ok, I have never really hated it but its been the source of more frustration for me than I care to recount.
I plugged my ipod into the xbox 360 and it automatically showed up! The xbox totally takes over the ipod meaning you can use the remote to scroll through tunes and create playlists. And even better...it worked the first time I tried it!!! No struggling with software updates and crap. Realising I wouldn't have to mess with the ipod to make it work, I walked around with a silly grin for almost an hour. Seriously, whoohoo! (yeah I know, simple minds...)
This is the way things should work. Now if I could transfer music from the xbox to the ipod I would be super happy. I bet there will be a hack for that shortly.
Something else I'm diggin' is that you can stick a cd in the xbox and it will rip it to the hard drive. (which you can also store photos on).
Games wise, Kameo is a bit boring. I'm looking forward to Project Gotham 3 of course and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
I wonder if MS will enter into the handheld gaming console market anytime soon? The Sony PSP is a fantastic system that interacts with the PS2. MS could do some really interesting stuff with the xbox 360 and a handheld. (xbox 180? haha)

Xbox 360 and Mercurys turning retrograde???
I don't exactly know how this mercury turning retrograde works but in the past month not only did our tv go kablooie, my mother and Scott's folks both lost tvs! Not only that but the phone died and the van needs brake work.
Sheesh! No more broken stuff for a bit ok????
On a more positive note, the tv is repaired and the xbox 360 arrived first thing this morning! It came with the game Kameo and it looks pretty darn cool!! Need for Speed Most Wanted or madden football should be arriving in another couple of weeks. Project Gotham Racing 3 isn't out until the 22nd unfortunately.

Title, ENT, Music, POS TV, Xbox, TV shows, Books, Brrr!
Check out the email style title. :)
I just thought I'd post a big fluffy update on me and some of what I've been up to.
I went to see an ENT (ears nose throat) doc yesterday. Finally!
So my balance sucks. (not a surprise) I have to go back for an ENG. (electronystagmography) I'm not sure why. I'm on week 3 of 6 of the antibiotics. I'm hoping by week 6 its all resolved.
The good news is my hearing is (according to the dr.) perfect! Whhhattt???? I've been a headphone junkie since I was 11-12 when I got my first walkman. Honestly, I've been through more sets of headphones than shoes!!! Plus add all the loud concerts and I've always played music/guitar loud.
To say I was very pleasantly surprised would be an understatement.
I found some cd's while going through stuff in the basement.
Two favourites I had forgotten about were the Mortal Kombat Soundtrack and Loreena McKennitt - The Visit
Its been nice getting reaquainted with them both.
The tv is messed up. The blue gun isn't working like it should so the picture is all yellowish. Hopefully it will be fixed ASAP because the XBOX 360 will be here any day now! Thanks a lot Murphy!
I picked up series 8 & 9 of the show As Time Goes By the other day. I think series nine is the last one so I'm a little sad that I won't have any new ones to watch. I've also been watching "Huff".
Book wise, I'm starting George R.R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series this weekend.
I forgot my 180's this morning so my ears ache like hell! The street we take on the walk to school is a freakin' wind tunnel.
So thats it for today!

Hallowe'en
We stopped by Momma and Poppa's house on Hallowe'en and were surprised to find a witch! She looked a lot like Momma and gave us chocolate so I guess she was a nice witch. With Batman there to protect us, (complete with sparkley, light up dress shoes) we weren't scared anyway.
Unfortunately, Batman fell victim to a tummy ache so we called it a night early.
My camera has been taking weird pics lately so I'm thinking its nearly fubar'd. It survived a 4 feet drop today thanks to the otter box it resides in and I can only hope the jolt will have fixed it rather than made things worse. I don't think Santa reads my blog but just in case, I've been good this year. :)

Maple syrup is really great stuff
My cat Monty is diabetic. I say "my cat" because its my head he occasionally sleeps curled around and I also say "my cat" because Monty is always after my attention. Its to the point where Spyro (puppy) gets jealous if Monty comes near me. Spyro constantly tries to get to me first. Of course Spyro always must sleep draped across any part of me to compete with Monty. How loved do I feel????
Poor Monty went hypoglycemic tonight. :( He couldn't walk across the floor he was so weak. He was also completely dazed. (couldn't focus his eyes) I snapped out of my freak out pretty quickly and got him some maple syrup. Within about 5 minutes, he was much better. After about 10 minutes he walked out of the room and down to the kitchen all the while demanding I feed him. He feasted like a king on leftover chicken.
I'll have to adjust his insulin and see how it goes for the next few days. I could tell something was up last night (I wasn't sure what) because he curled up next to me when I went to bed and stayed all night. At least now I know.
I have been this relieved very few times in my life.

Links and stuff
I added a link to Penny Arcade.
(my fave comic strip from years ago) It used to be mainly geared to gamers.
Check out the comic below from 1999. Its a direct dig at the duke nukem team. (which Scott was part of) Hopefully he won't be too grumpy at me for posting it. :)
I removed the link to sampdoriapoint.com. I've emailed them a few times asking if they ship to Canada but I haven't received a reply. I even sent an email off in "babelfish" Italian and they didn't even email back a "WTF are you trying to say, stupido!!"
Hmph. I guess I'll be scouring Ebay for the shirt I really like.

Whats your ecological footprint?
I scored pretty low compared to others (6.4) but once I start driving on a regular basis it'll probably go up to at least a 12. If there is only 1.8 biologically productive global hectares per person then we're running at a huge deficit.

Hallowe'en jokes
Hallowe'en is coming up! For the past few years, Ridley has gone as a unicorn. (she loves that costume still!) This year, I managed to convince her to go as something different. She was trying to choose between a princess and a superhero but ultimately the superhero won. So, Batman she is! She was dismayed to find out later that Batman has no super powers. (I think I even mentioned when shopping that Batman is lame compared to Spiderman or Superman..but ah well)
I'll post pics after Hallowe'en.
Here are some jokes from Ridley...
What did the ghost eat?
Boo-berry pie.
What do witches eat at the beach?
Sand-witches.
Whats green and walks through walls?
Casper the friendly pickle.
(Ridley's version of the answer was "a friendly pickle" which of course had me scratching my head but laughing all the same)

When guppies attack
I was feeding the fish a couple of weeks ago when I noticed that one of the guppies was very thin and his tail was mangled. He would hide up by the filter towards the top of the tank. I went out and got another guppy because I read that some guppies get jealous of other guppies tails and getting another guppy can sometimes defuse the situation.
I wasn't sure if it was the other guppy being aggressive at this point.
Unfortunately the thin guppy didn't make it.
The next day, the new guppy was dead. Crazy! It was then that I saw the remaining guppy attacking my blue platy. It was like something out of Jaws! I'm pretty sure now that the blood thirsty guppy also killed the platy babies in our tank.
We immediately dumped the serial killer into a glass and took it back to the pet store. We picked up a gold platy and a black molly and peace is restored once again to the tank.
After all that, I really think guppies are UGLY.

Aberdeen St
I grew up on Aberdeen St and so did my mother. We sold the house and my mother fled for greener suburbs a couple of years ago. That house was my (and my sisters) legacy from my grandmother. I loved living 2 blocks from downtown and had hoped to move back there someday. The Lees were our neighbours and over the years so were The Greenwoods, The Orrs, The Yorgas, The Karisimos (sp??) and various other families who came and went.
When my mom approached my sister and I about selling, I was mixed. I loved that house but also knew very well the troubles my mother had been having with the students. We finally agreed to sell and move my mom to what we all called "the burbs" (said with a gasp).
In my experience, most students are great neighbours. Over the years we had many at our dinner table for my dads famous pesto. Years later, students would come back to visit us or to see my dad at his tailor shop. In recent years, the entire landscape has changed. I hope Queens gets a handle on this or next years homecoming is going to end in tragedy.
Here is an article that appeared in todays Kingston Whig Standard
Students claim Aberdeen Street as their own
Some contend site of riot is part of campus life and residents should move
By Jennifer Pritchett
Local News - Thursday, October 06, 2005 @ 07:00
Almost two weeks after Queen’s University received a black eye for this year’s Homecoming mayhem, student reaction on the street where the riot erupted ranges from unrepentant to embarrassed.
Still, some vow the giant bash on Aberdeen Street will live on next year because they feel that the neighbourhood is student territory.
“This isn’t a residential area. It’s a student ghetto,” said Nick Brennan, a second-year political science student.
He describes the student neighbourhood around the university as a major attraction for people coming to Queen’s and said it should therefore be considered by Kingstonians as an important part of campus life, even though it’s not officially part of the institution.
“People come here for this,” he said. “Queen’s students support the downtown [businesses] and what would Kingston be without the university, anyway?”
Brennan is one of several dozen Queen’s students who live on Aberdeen Street, the short avenue where as many as 7,000 partyers became a violent mob on Homecoming weekend.
Queen’s principal Karen Hitchcock met some of those students on Monday night in a room adjacent to her office at the university. The event was invitation-only for Aberdeen Street students and was closed to the public.
Hitchcock spoke to students for about 20 minutes. She said the university won’t tolerate the kind of lawless behaviour that occurred at the event, Patrick Deane, Queen’s vice-principal academic, told The Whig-Standard.
Though she didn’t give students any opportunity to voice their thoughts during the closed-door meeting, she invited them to contact her office later with ideas about how to ensure the riot doesn’t happen again.
Brennan wasn’t at the meeting, but he doesn’t see the residents of Aberdeen Street putting an end to their annual Homecoming street party.
“I thought [the party] was awesome,” he said. “I think the criticism of it was a bit overdone.”
However, he said that when some partyers overturned a stolen car and later set it ablaze, “things got a little crazy.”
He said he spent the night in his house or on a friend’s balcony near Aberdeen and Earl streets.
He suggested that families who live in the area “should go to the cottage for the weekend” so they won’t be upset by the disturbances.
“I wouldn’t keep [my car] parked there when I know it’s Homecoming weekend,” he said. “I would put it in a parking lot for the night.”
As for the lone family on Aberdeen Street, Brennan said he didn’t know them, even though just one house separates his place from theirs. He was unaware that their property was vandalized during the riot.
“I feel really badly for them, but maybe it’s time for them to move,” he said.
The 19-year-old student from Toronto wasn’t aware that Howard and Sim Lee have lived on the street for 35 years, long before the area became dominated by students.
“It’s only a matter of time [before] it becomes a student house, too,” he said. “My grandparents wouldn’t live in the middle of a student ghetto.”
But as Brennan was speaking with a Whig reporter in front of the elderly couple’s home yesterday, Howard Lee, 78, came out on the lawn and the two met for the first time. Brennan and fellow student Pete Macnee immediately apologized to Lee for the damage done to his property on the night of Sept. 24.
“I’m sorry about your fence – that’s pretty annoying,” Macnee told Lee. “It’s terrible. We have to fix it. I hope next year’s [Homecoming] is better.”
Both Macnee and Brennan were sympathetic and told him that they could help repair the damages.
The Lees were held captive in their own home during the riot as a massive crowd of partyers pushed up against their front door, preventing the family from opening it.
All night long, young men and women rang the Lees’ doorbell yelling that they wanted to come in to use the bathroom. When the Lees didn’t let them in, some vomited and urinated on their front step.
The couple could only watch through their windows as drunken revellers jumped on top of their three cars parked in the driveway. Repairs to just one of the cars are estimated at roughly $1,000.
Yesterday, Lee showed the two students his knocked-down fence in the backyard and the damage done to some woodwork on the side of the house.
Later, Macnee told The Whig that he would e-mail Queen’s principal Karen Hitchcock and tell her that they want to help the Lees.
“At the meeting with Hitchcock [on Monday night], she told us that we disgraced Queen’s and that we need to do something,” he said. “And we will.”
Brennan said he can understand why the Lees and the other permanent residents are upset with the students, even though some of those responsible for the destruction weren’t from Queen’s.
“If my car was stomped on and it cost $1,000 to fix, I’d be pissed,” he said.
Macnee, a second-year art history student from Toronto, admitted that this year’s Aberdeen party was crazy and “it was kind of stressful.”
“I wouldn’t even invite my girlfriend,” he said. “It was scary.”
He said the house where he lives at the corner of Aberdeen and Earl was also damaged during the riot when somebody kicked in the door. The repair cost his landlord $700. Brennan said his landlord also “flipped out” after seeing the damage done to the house he lives in.
Brennan didn’t know why the street party on Aberdeen became so violent this year, but like many other students since the riot, he blamed it partially on the police presence.
“I saw this bus pull up on Division Street and all these cops come out with their full gear on and I knew what kind of night it was going to be right then,” he said. “Well, I want to say it was the police, but that’s probably taking the easy way out.”
Neither Brennan nor Macnee could offer any solution to prevent the violence from recurring next year, but they said the party will keep happening regardless of what the police and the university administration try to do to stop it.
The street is perfect for a party because it’s just two blocks long and is conveniently situated in the heart of the student neighbourhood, they said.
They also said that next year’s Aberdeen party needs a DJ booth erected on scaffolding so that the atmosphere is more like a party with good music.
But David Shulman, a fourth-year philosophy student and Aberdeen Street resident, was embarrassed about what happened during Homecoming. He was giving several alumni a tour of his student house and they were up on the roof when they saw some young men flip the stolen car.
“I felt I had to apologize to them,” he said. “I was so embarrassed.”

Pictures! (for a change..haha)
Since the pictures I post are usually of Ridley (or gadgets) I thought I'd post some recent pics of other people and pets for a change. Hey, I might even post a pic of the fish if I'm feeling adventurous later!
I need to look into a photo album I think but in the meantime, here is Monty (my 13 yr old kitty) Me and Sam, Scott and Spyro (still a pup).

Windows Mobile Treo
Its a phone that has a 1 megapixel camera, bluetooth, wifi plus all the regular pocket pc functions. (ebooks, movies, mp3s, games, word etc) Sweet! I don't use a cell phone often but this is just too cool.
I think I better start saving my pennies.
Correction: I was mistaken, I guess they have no plans to add wifi at this point. Hopefully they change that before it hits the masses. SD wifi cards just add a silly looking protrusion to your gadget so I hope they reconsider.

Still sick but here goes...
Every few weeks I end up with a sinus infection and feel like I've been hit by a truck. Unfortunately it had to happen for Sams visit!
She arrived Saturday afternoon and when she walked in the door, it was like no time had passed. Scott agreed. It was like she'd never moved away. Yay for that!
Even Monty graced up with his presence (kitty) and was lovin' on Sam.
Of course Spyro (mini poodle) did his dance for Sam...I'm not sure he actually stopped. :)
After a bit, Ridley asked Sam to go and do yoga with her. So while I made pesto, Ridley and Sam did yoga. After I messed up the gnocchi and Scott went and got more (you HAVE to strain them as soon as they float to the top!) we FINALLY got to eat. After lunch, Sam and I headed downtown to get her checked in and to have a beer at the biergarten. The biergarten was closed! (rain..grr) Figures! We did manage to hit The Toucan, Chez Piggy and The Merchant McLiam though. I felt like a wimp but I was super tired and getting lightheaded so I finally headed home sometime before 11. Thanks for not calling me a wimp Sam!
Oh and we popped in to see my mom at her work too. Neat to find out that Sam, Wind and I may be related by marriage! (long story Wind but you're the link! Sam will fill you in.)
So all in all a GREAT visit! Next time, I hope to meet Wind. Who knows, maybe we'll even end up in their neck of the woods someday.

Quick pics - story at 11
I'm not feeling that great and neither is Ridley so I'll write all about our visit and post more pics tommorow! Here are some pics for you Wind...and one just for Marshall. :)
Before I go, I have to say it was great to see Sam again!
I'll have to start training so I can actually drink the next time we visit.
(which hopefully will be less than 8 yrs from now..hah)

Today!
Sam comes to visit today!
Ridley has already asked me 20 times this morning "When will Sam get here???"
WTF is it with this rain??? I guess the patio plan is out!

Solar flares = Auroras!
A coronal mass ejection is headed towards earth which means a lot of us will be able to see auroras tonight! Theres nothing like looking out your window at 2am and seeing a HUGE green, eerie curtain waving in the sky.
The animation below is from Spaceweather.com. It boggles my mind that an explosion like that hurtles itself towards earth, causes a geomagnetic storm and leaves us with such awesomely weird displays of colour.

Its all about the shoes
Tommorow is the day. Ridley starts grade one and I become a stay at home mom to...erm, nobody! What a change! It'll be sad but hey, I'm going to have a bit more freedom. I can actually take my coffee to the park and sit under a tree and read/study. I could do this before but with mixed results.
I tried to take Ridley back to school shopping. She shot me down at every turn. "I don't need a new backpack, lunchbox, pencil case, pencils, erasers" But...aha! The shoes. Pink and silver Nikes that she swears make her run twice as fast. She is a shoe fiend and I take full responsibility.

Two people calling 'em out!
I love what these people are doing! (file this under non fluffy..heh)
First, Cindy Sheehan. I saw the commercial on CNN the other night and nearly fell out of my chair in shock! Check out the link below to see what she said!
Cindy Sheehans message
Second, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Is global warming to blame for hurricane katrina's intensity? Regardless, our environment is screwed! I think its great hes speaking out and his name surely helps him be heard.
His article entitled "Deadly Immunity" is amazing.
I appreciate him speaking out about something that I feel strongly about. I insisted we delay Ridley's vaccines because of uncertainty about thimerosal. Here in Canada, they no longer use thimerosal in childhood vaccines. At the time of Ridleys birth, they still used thimerosal in the US, where she was born. Please note that I'm am not against childhood vaccinations. I am against using potentially unsafe agents in them. Ridley and I both got shots last year before she started school. She had the usual round and I got the chicken pox vaccine.

Fluffy post
Only one more week until Ridley starts grade 1. She'll be in school full time this year. I can't believe summer is winding down, its gone much too quick. Ridley has learned to swim (doggy paddle, shes still in lessons) and we took the training wheels off her bike last weekend! Shes also learning to tie her shoes. She has changed so much over the past year. She loves Pokemon, swimming, scootering, and Bratz (ugh!! we're trying to demystify them now) She desperately wants "high heels" (platform shoes) and loves to dress up. She can't wait to get back to school but wishes she wasn't so tall (4'2)and that her feet weren't so big (2-3). I think she'll find that a lot of her classmates have caught up to her this year.
Thankfully she still loves good dolly, my stories and cuddling. I didn't cry last year when I dropped her off for her first day of school but I think I probably will this year. Sniff.
For me, job hunting awaits! Its been 8 years since I've worked out of the home. (not counting a part time job I had) I'm thinking of getting my A+ certification and applying for some tech work. I've been doing really well on the practise tests. I can't believe the stuff I learned years ago is still relevant. (ok maybe it isn't but on the tests it is)
I need to learn to use some spiffy wordpress like Sam and Wind so I can have categories. Fluffy personal updates would be a good category. :)

Looks are deceiving..
They look sweet don't they? Careful, this 6 year old girl and her 92 yr old great grandma are trouble!
They viciously chased me down the hall at great grandmas retirement home yesterday. (note: flip flips are not ideal footwear when videotaping and walking backwards)
Ridley rode on great grandmas walker while great grandma pushed her..I didn't have a chance! I'll post some video this week. (maybe, how embarrasing!!!)

ipod love/hate
If it ain't broke...well you know!
Apparently, I've never heard the term before.
To summarize, ipod firmware update + itunes update + ipod won't connect + external hard drive = fubar'd ipod with songs that skip every second!
Never never again.
2 days sans ipod is much too quiet!
I scoped out mp3 players this weekend (while plotting my ipods untimely and mysterious demise).
The Cowon iaudio x5 looks great!
I can't wait to see what they have by the time I actually replace my ipod.

Hooked on Ebooks
I love ebooks. I always liked them but got really hooked on them when Ridley was a baby.
Ridley was born premature at 32 weeks so of course I hovered over her...lots.
She wouldn't sleep if I was holding her and she wouldn't sleep with me so I would sit by her crib and read an ebook on my palm pilot. Try reading in the dark with a paperback! Later on, she would decide that she didn't want to be lonely at night which meant I couldn't have the light on to read before bed. By then I had my nifty cool pocket pc, problem solved. Happy mommy and baby. I love the convenience and instant gratification of logging onto amazon.com at 3am, purchasing and downloading a new book to read. If it isn't available to buy, I can find it elsewhere.
The Harry Potter folks decided not to release any electronic versions of Harry Potter. I don't think that was a wise decision. Within 11 hours, the new Harry Potter book was available for download at your local neighbourhood newsgroup. (who couldn't have predicted that???) I'm curious how many ebooks would have been sold at midnight if they'd had the foresight to make it available.
I may be in the minority as far as ebook readers go, but I will be buying the new book once it becomes available in the gift edition. (October) I have all 5 of the previous books in the gift edition put aside for Ridley already. I can't wait until she can read them. Although I have a feeling that by that time, she'll be hiding under the covers with an ebook instead of a flashlight.
My favourite ebook reader for pocket pc is uBook
It doesn't support copy protected ebooks so unfortunately, I have to use Microsoft reader for any books that I buy.
I read on an Axim x3i which has a jog dial. (makes for easier "page turning")
Project Gutenberg has tons of free ebooks available for download.
And if you get hooked on ebooks and don't know what to do with your paper books, maybe you could "release them into the wild".

Movies aren't in theaters long enough?
For this procrastinator.
Star Wars is no longer playing in theaters here.
I really did mean to go. I guess I didn't want to see it that badly.
Ah well.
I did the same thing with the Bridget Jones sequel. Of course that was out on dvd something like a week later anyway. ;)
We'll be heading to the drive in to see Willy Wonka next weekend. Really, truly...
Ridley really wants to see that or the Herbie flick and honestly, I'll take Willy Wonka over Herbie any day.
I transferred all the hi 8 video tapes to the computer finally. SOMEONE decided to screw with the aspect ratio when taping which meant I couldn't just do a straight capture. I had to sit and watch 12+ hrs of tape and split it into chunks. (insert various inappropriate curse words here)
But its finally done! I am officially a sap. Watching those old home movies makes me cry.
The new camcorder is great and Ridley can't wait to do a movie in the backyard with her ponies. I imagine good dolly (her beloved doll) will have a starring role. Poor good dolly. She is so "loved" that the last time I washed her, it was in a lingerie bag and all of her stuffing came out through the rather large hole in her head. She was velour but the nap has worn off and shes some weird looking mesh now! I may strongly suggest that Ridley use "backup dolly" (yes thats her name, shes just like good dolly but shes like new).
Someone please send some cooler weather this way?? The only good thing about it? Cool thunderstorms. Horizontal rain is ummm interesting...

A little bit of gadget goodness. Minidv camcorder.
I worked out a trade for a minidv camcorder so I'm picking it up this week! Its a Canon ZR80.
Its low end but I don't exactly need a pro camera. :)
I will be able to transfer my old hi 8 tapes to the minidv and then straight to the computer via firewire. I had been looking at getting a video capture card but this turns out to be a much better solution for me.
I'll have to add a firewire card to my notebook to accomodate the camcorder. Side benefit is that
I will be able to hook it (notebook via firewire) up to the DVR and grab tv shows for Ridley to watch on my pocket pc. (car trips) I'm finally fairly proficient with reencoding video so it sounds like more of a hassle than it actually is.
A nice little gadget rush just in time for the weekend!

Random stuff, drivers license..holy crap...
Just some random updates here.
I'm booking my drivers test tommorow for the end of August. I promised myself I'd get my license by summers end, so now I'm commited! Am I the only 34 yr old freak who doesn't drive???? I guess kickin' butt at Project Gotham Racing doesn't qualify as "driving" does it...
I am NERVOUS!
I've also got to brush up on my french! I am technically bilingual but I'm struggling to remember words for the most basic things.
Now that I've got my notebook back, I've been playing The Sims again. Fun stuff though I don't give a hoot about my sims. I just like designing the houses. :)
I installed Pocket Blogger and as soon as I get the wireless on my pocket pc setup again, I'll hopefully be able to update from it.
Ridley starts swimming lessons at the end of the month. She also finishes kindergarten! I can't believe shes starting grade 1 next year. There are rumours flying around her class about a grade 1 kid who is *gasp* half girl/half boy AND who calls the kindergarteners "babies". Shes decided she'd rather stay home with me next year. Heh. Where do kids get this stuff from???

Late night ramblings
Just some 4am rambling because I'm bored/exhausted.
Ridley has been up with a 103+ fever tonight. She has tonsillitis again. I hope the antibiotics kick in quick. She wasn't even interested in watching "The Muppets - Wizard of Oz". When she doesn't want to watch The Muppets, you know something is wrong.
Tait (my nephew) had surgery on thursday. (skin grafts on his leg) Hes a tough little guy.
He was playing basketball in the playroom 8 hours after his surgery! Unfortunately, he will be spending his 3rd birthday in the hospital. Obviously thats not the birthday party my sister was hoping to have for him.
My ipod/itunes is frustrating me. Massimo Ranieri doesn't seem to be its cup of tea. First it listed Massimo Ranieri 6 times in the artist listing so I reinstalled. Now its decided to change the id tags of Michael Buble songs to Massimo Ranieri... And now of course all Massimo Ranieri's songs have gone *poof*.
I have to reinstall again once I get my notebook back so I wonder what it will do this time.
Rose Rosse by The Clash????? It seems to like the M's, maybe it will rename all my Maceo Parker?
Time for some coffee!

Sid???? Another bit of fluff for today.
Ridley and I went to the flea market today. We were in line at the chip truck when a lady began to awww over Ridley. (because she had her arms wrapped around my waist and was playing shy)
We chatted for a bit and then she left because her food was ready. "Bye Sid!" she said as she waved goodbye to me. Heh. I have no clue who she was but she seemed happy to run into me.
Another pic of Ridley, sorry. :)
Cool face paint huh?

Thats it!
All done for now. I'm off to curl up with a couple of Cary Grant movies.
Zip.ca has sent me ummm 8+ (I've lost count!) Cary Grant movies in a row. Ordinarily I would be annoyed but I'm really diggin' his movies!
